                                              According to I.A.Richards language can be used in two ways, scientific use of language and the emotive one. Language of poetry is purely emotive, in its original primitive state. This language affects feelings. Hence we must avoid intuitive and over literal reading of poems. Words in poetry have an emotive value, and the figurative language used by poets conveys those emotions effectively andforcefully.

Kya yeh mera pehla pehla pyaar hai.

                                     How can Moon burn? How can Sky melt? How can Land walk? It is impossible but writer used metaphoric language. In this song we can find feelings of lovers to each other. Writer try to show lover's feelings through metaphors.
Lovers feel that in love, all things are not as it is but all things are changed. And they can find that all things are beautiful in love. They can also feel that their dreams are changed in reality. They have also a question in their mind that, is their relationship since before long long ago? They want to meet in all born.
Beloved tells that she follows her lover. She lost her self behind her lover.

How can sea thrust? How can night awake?

Here, writer used personification very well. And also asked many questions in this song.

* misunderstanding in poetry 

v       “How are we to explain to those who see nothing in poetical language but a tissue of ridiculous exaggerations, childish ‘fancies’, ignorant conceits and absurd symbolizations – in what way its sense is to be read?” explain with reference to the I.A.Richards’s essay The Figurative Language.

v       “Poetry is different from prose and needs a different attitude for right understanding.” Elucidate.

Four types of misunderstanding:

o   1. Misunderstanding of the sense of poetry: Careless, intuitive reading (rhyme or irregular syntax)

o   2. Over-literal reading – prosaic reading

o   3. Defective scholarship

o   4. Difference in meaning of words in poetry and prose.

                             I've selected the poem, "विद्रोह" by Kedarnath sinh. In this poem the poet uses personification for various things. We can see that the things can speak about their situation. In this poem chair, table, tv, cupboard, shawl, books, bed, water these all things can speak in words, which surprises us. We know that bed can't speak and even all these things can't speak or react though poet shows that these things can speak out loudly. 

आज घर में घुसा
तो वहां अजब दृश्य था
सुनिये- मेरे बिस्तर ने कहा-
यह रहा मेरा इस्तीफ़ा
मैं अपने कपास के भीतर
वापस जाना चाहता हूं

उधर कुर्सी और मेज़ का
एक संयुक्त मोर्चा था
दोनों तड़पकर बोले-
जी- अब बहुत हो चुका
आपको सहते-सहते
हमें बेतरह याद आ रहे हैं
हमारे पेड़
और उनके भीतर का वह
ज़िंदा द्रव
जिसकी हत्या कर दी है

उधर आलमारी में बंद
किताबें चिल्ला रही थीं

बुरा हाल था
